Maharaja Ranjit Singh was born on November 13, 1780, in Gujranwala (now in Pakistan). He was the son of Maha Singh, the leader of the Sukerchakia Misl. His mother’s name was Raj Kaur.
Life and Rise to Power:
Ranjit Singh fought his first battle at the young age of 12. In 1799, he captured Lahore and established his rule. In 1801, he held his coronation ceremony and officially founded the Khalsa Raj. His empire stretched across Punjab, Jammu, Kashmir, Pathankot, Hazara, Peshawar, and up to Attock.
A Great Warrior and Administrator:
He was a powerful and reformist ruler. His army, the "Sikh Khalsa Army," was one of the strongest military forces in South Asia. He never fought a war with the British nor surrendered his kingdom to them.
Religion and Culture:
He respected all religions. The Guru Granth Sahib was placed on the royal throne. He renovated and gold-plated the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple).
Death_
Maharaja Ranjit Singh passed away on June 27, 1839, in Lahore.
Legacy:
He is known as the "Sher-e-Punjab" (The Lion of Punjab). He laid the foundation of a Sikh empire that remained united and strong until his death.
