THE HISTORY OF BHAGAT KABIR

[ THE HISTORY OF  BHAGAT KABIR ]

Bhagat Kabir (also spelled Kabir or Kabeer) was a prominent 15th-century Indian mystic poet and saint, whose verses had a profound influence on the Bhakti Movement and later on Sikhism, Sant Mat, and Kabir Panth traditions. Here's an overview of his life and legacy:

Early Life:

Born: Around 1398 CE (exact date debated)

Place of Birth: Likely Varanasi (Banaras), India

Parentage: According to legend, Kabir was found as an infant by a poor Muslim weaver couple, Neeru and Neema, and raised by them.

Religious Identity:

Though raised in a Muslim family, Kabir was deeply influenced by the Hindu saint Ramananda and often drew from both Hindu and Islamic teachings.

( Teachings and Philosophy )

Kabir’s teachings focused on spirituality over religion, denouncing both ritualistic Hinduism and orthodox Islam.

He promoted:

Oneness of God – referred to as Ram, Allah, Khuda, or Hari.

Inner devotion (bhakti) over external rituals.

Equality of all human beings, regardless of caste or religion.

Simple living and truthfulness.

( Writings and Poetry )

His poetry was composed in simple Hindi dialects (Sant Bhasha), accessible to common people.

His dohas (couplets) are sharp, wise, and spiritually deep. Example:

"Kabira khada bazaar mein, sabki maange khair,

Na kahu se dosti, na kahu se bair."

(“Kabir stands in the marketplace, blessing all. He holds no enmity nor special friendship with anyone.”)

: Influence on Sikhism :

Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru, included Kabir’s 227 hymns in the Guru Granth Sahib.

In Sikh scripture, he is referred to with respect as Bhagat Kabir Ji.

 ( Death and Legacy )

Kabir is believed to have died around 1518 CE.

After his death, both Hindus and Muslims claimed him. A legend says that when his body was uncovered, only flowers were found — symbolizing his transcendence above religious boundaries.

Kabir Panth, a religious community, follows his teachings even today.

His verses continue to be sung in bhajans, kirtans, and quoted in spiritual discourse across India and beyond.
