Bhagat Pipa Ji – The Royal Seeker Turned Saint

Bhagat Pipa Ji was one of the fifteen Bhagats whose hymns are included in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji. He was a king turned saint, who renounced his throne and luxuries to walk the path of devotion and spiritual truth.

Early Life and Background

Bhagat Pipa Ji was born in 1352 CE in Gagana village, near Ujjain (present-day Madhya Pradesh, India).

He was born into a Rajput royal family, and became the king of Gagaraungarh. Though raised in a Hindu royal household, he was deeply spiritual from a young age.

( Turning Point )

Bhagat Pipa Ji longed for spiritual realization and traveled to meet the saint Ramananda Ji in Varanasi.

Ramananda Ji accepted him as a disciple and guided him toward inner devotion, detachment from ego, and remembrance of God’s Name (Naam).

Inspired by truth, Bhagat Pipa Ji renounced his kingdom, gave up idol worship, and adopted a humble life of service and devotion.

Spiritual Beliefs and Teachings

God is formless (Nirgun) and resides within all.

He rejected external rituals and emphasized inner purity, humility, and meditative remembrance of God.

He taught that truth is found through love, surrender, and simplicity, not through religious show.

( Contribution to Guru Granth Sahib Ji )

One hymn by Bhagat Pipa Ji is included in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, in Raag Dhanasari.

In his hymn, he clearly states:

I searched for God in temples, idols, and holy places, but found Him within my own heart."

( Legacy )

Bhagat Pipa Ji’s life is a powerful example of spiritual transformation—from a king to a mystic.

His teachings emphasize the oneness of God, the futility of ego, and the need for sincere devotion. His message continues to inspire seekers across all religions.

Key Message

>>> “The Lord dwells within; search your own heart, not outside.”
