 THE HISTORY OF BHATT  BAL

Bhatt Bal – A Poet of Divine Praise

Bhatt Bal was one of the eleven Bhatt poets whose compositions are preserved in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the eternal scripture of Sikhism. The Bhatts were originally Brahmin scholars who, upon encountering the spiritual greatness of the Sikh Gurus, dedicated themselves to praising the Gurus through deeply devotional poetry.

Life and Spiritual Influence

Bhatt Bal lived during the time of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Guru of the Sikhs.

He came to the Guru’s court along with other learned Bhatts, where he witnessed the spiritual majesty of the Sikh tradition. Deeply moved, he used his poetic skills to express love and reverence for the Gurus.

Contribution to Guru Granth Sahib

Five Swayyas (devotional poetic verses) by Bhatt Bal are included in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, in Raag Ramkali, under the section called Bhatt Bani. His hymns are in glorification of Guru Ram Das Ji and Guru Arjan Dev Ji.

Themes in His Poetry

The Guru as the supreme savior who removes the fear of death and illusion.

The immeasurable greatness of the Guru, who connects souls with the Divine.

Bhatt Bal speaks with awe and admiration, using poetic imagery to describe the Guru’s spiritual radiance.

Legacy

Bhatt Bal's hymns continue to be sung in Sikh congregations for their depth of spiritual devotion and clarity of thought. His words reflect gratitude, humility, and love, offering timeless praise of the Sikh Gurus who guide humanity on the path of truth.
