Bhatt Bhika – A Saintly Poet Devoted to Guru Amar Das Ji

Bhatt Bhika was one of the eleven Bhatt poets whose hymns appear in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the holy scripture of Sikhism. Among the Bhatt contributors, Bhatt Bhika is believed to be one of the earliest, having had direct association with Guru Amar Das Ji, the third Sikh Guru.

[ Life and Spiritual Journey ]

Bhatt Bhika lived during the time of Guru Amar Das Ji and may have also witnessed the spiritual legacy of Guru Ram Das Ji and Guru Arjan Dev Ji.

He was a Brahmin by birth and a scholar of classical texts, but he turned toward Sikh teachings after being spiritually awakened by the Gurus. His deep humility and reverence for the Gurus is evident in his writings.

Contribution to Guru Granth Sahib

Two Swayyas (devotional verses) by Bhatt Bhika are included in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, under the section Bhatt Bani in Raag Ramkali.

His poetry praises the spiritual greatness of Guru Amar Das Ji, referring to him as the one who liberates souls from worldly illusion.

( Message in His Hymns )

The Guru is the true path to salvation, beyond rituals and caste.

Real wisdom lies in serving and surrendering to the Guru. His writing reflects a deep internal spiritual experience, not just poetic expression.

Legacy

Bhatt Bhika's hymns are among the most spiritually mature and humble compositions in Bhatt Bani. His early association with the Sikh Gurus makes him an important historical and devotional figure in Sikh history.
