Bhatt Sukhdev Ji – A Devoted Bard of the Guru's Court
Bhatt Sukhdev Ji was one of the prominent Bhatts (court poets) whose hymns are included in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the eternal Guru of the Sikhs. He belonged to a group of learned Brahmin bards who were deeply inspired by the teachings of the Sikh Gurus and became devoted followers.
Background and Devotion_
Bhatt Sukhdev Ji is believed to have been associated with the court of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru. Along with other Bhatts, he composed verses praising the divine qualities of the Guru, describing him as a manifestation of the eternal Truth (Satguru).
Sukhdev Ji’s writings reflect deep reverence, spiritual clarity, and an understanding of the Guru’s role as a bridge between the soul and the Divine.
Hymns in Guru Granth Sahib Ji_
Only one Swaiya (praise verse) attributed to Bhatt Sukhdev Ji is found in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji. This verse appears in the “Bhatt Bani” section towards the end of the scripture. Though brief, the contribution is rich in spiritual wisdom and poetic depth.
His Swaiya glorifies the Guru and reinforces the idea that liberation (mukti) comes through the Guru’s grace, not through ritualistic practices or scholarly debates.
Legacy:
Bhatt Sukhdev Ji, like other Bhatts, played a vital role in recognizing and articulating the spiritual greatness of the Sikh Gurus. His contribution, though limited in volume, reflects a profound spiritual connection and helps preserve the divine narrative of the Gurus for generations to come.
