 Meaning and Significance of Waheguru

“Waheguru” is the name of the Supreme Being (Akal Purakh) in Sikhism. It is considered the most sacred, supreme, and spiritually significant name for Sikhs. “Waheguru” is also a Gurmantar—a mantra given for meditation and remembrance of God.


Etymology of “Waheguru”

The word “Waheguru” is made up of two parts:

Wahe – meaning: Wonderful, Amazing, Glorious.

Guru – meaning: The one who leads from darkness to light.

Together, Waheguru means:

"The Wondrous Guru", "The Miraculous Lord", or "The Divine Teacher who dispels darkness and brings light."

Practice of Waheguru Simran

In Sikhism, chanting or meditating on the name Waheguru is of great importance. It is not just a word but a spiritual journey—a way to connect one’s soul with the Divine. When a Sikh says “Waheguru,” they are praising God and aligning their consciousness with His presence.

Reference in Gurbani:


The Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of the Sikhs, often glorifies the repetition (simran) of Waheguru. For example:

> "Waho Waho Guru Gobind Singh, Aape Gur Chela."

"Waheguru Waheguru Kar Mann, Jeea Laye Gud Paaye."

These lines highlight the spiritual sweetness and the life-giving essence of remembering Waheguru.

Conclusion

Waheguru is not just a name—it is the soul of Sikhism. It teaches that true wisdom and union with God can be achieved through remembrance and devotion. Chanting “Waheguru,” living in God’s will (Hukam), and walking the path of truth form the essence of the Sikh way of life.
