Bhagat Danna Ji – The Farmer with Divine Faith
Bhagat Danna Ji was one of the fifteen Bhagats whose hymns are included in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the eternal scripture of Sikhism. He was a simple farmer, known for his deep devotion and unwavering faith in God. His life is a beautiful example of pure bhakti (devotion) untouched by ego, caste, or formal education
( Early Life and Background )
Bhagat Danna Ji was born in the 15th century in Rajasthan, in a Hindu Jat family of farmers.
He lived a simple life as an agriculturist but had deep spiritual hunger. He believed that God could be attained not through rituals, but through love, devotion, and selfless service.
( Spiritual Journey )
Bhagat Danna Ji was inspired by saints and Bhagats, including Bhagat Namdev Ji and Bhagat Kabir Ji.
He longed for a vision of God, and despite his simple background, he had child-like faith that God lived in the idol. A famous story tells how he planted food before a stone idol, believing God would come and eat it. Seeing his innocent devotion, God indeed manifested, rewarding Danna’s true heart.
( Teachings and Beliefs )
God lives in every heart, not just in temples or idols.
Pure love and innocent faith are greater than scholarly knowledge or rituals.
Bhagat Danna Ji’s message was that spiritual realization is possible for anyone through Naam Simran (meditating on God’s Name) and sincere living.
(Contribution to Guru Granth Sahib Ji )
One hymn by Bhagat Danna Ji is included in Raag Asa in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji. His verse promotes the importance of true devotion over religious show, emphasizing the oneness of the Divine.
( Legacy )
Bhagat Danna Ji is respected in Sikhism and the Bhakti movement as a saint who reached God through faith and love, not status or ritual. A Gurdwara named after him exists in Danna village (Punjab) and in Rajasthan as well.
Key Message:
> “The Lord is won over not by riches, rituals, or knowledge, but by a heart filled with devotion.”
