Bhagat Jaidev Ji – The Devotee Poet of Divine Love
Bhagat Jaidev Ji was a celebrated Sanskrit poet, saint, and devotee of Lord Krishna, known for his deep spirituality and literary excellence. He is one of the fifteen Bhagats whose hymns are included in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the eternal scripture of Sikhism.
( Early Life and Background )
Bhagat Jaidev Ji was born in the 12th century in Kenduli village (near Puri, Odisha, or in Bengal—historians differ). He was a Brahmin by birth, and highly educated in Sanskrit literature and Hindu scriptures. He served in the court of King Lakshman Sen of Bengal as a royal poet.
( Spiritual Journey )
Despite royal fame, Jaidev Ji was deeply spiritual and devoted himself to Bhakti (devotion), especially toward Lord Vishnu (Krishna). He wrote the famous Gita Govinda, a poetic work describing the divine love between Krishna and Radha, which had a profound impact on the Bhakti movement. Jaidev Ji emphasized devotion over rituals, and saw love and surrender as the true path to God.
( Miracles and Devotion )
It is said that when his devotion was tested, Lord Krishna himself completed a verse of his poem when Jaidev Ji paused in doubt—showing the divine grace he was blessed with. He lived a humble life with his wife Padmavati, also a devotee and dancer in temple worship.
(Contribution to Guru Granth Sahib Ji )
One hymn by Bhagat Jaidev Ji is included in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, in Raag Maru.
His hymn teaches the path of detachment, remembrance of God, and renunciation of ego.The hymn praises those who live in the world but remain detached, constantly immersed in divine love.
( Legacy )
Bhagat Jaidev Ji is remembered as a symbol of devotion, poetic excellence, and spiritual love. His works influenced the Bhakti saints and even Sikh Gurus, who upheld the same principles of devotion and equality.A temple and shrine in Kenduli honors his memory.
( Key Message )
> “Blessed are those who, detached from worldly desires, constantly remember the Lord—they are truly free.”
