Bhagat Surdas Ji – A Devotional Poet of Love and Humility

Bhagat Surdas Ji was a blind poet-saint known for his intense devotion to Lord Krishna. Though hundreds of devotional hymns are attributed to him in other traditions, only one hymn by Bhagat Surdas Ji is included in the Guru Granth Sahib.

Basic Information:

Time Period: Approx. 1478–1583 CE

Birthplace: Sihi village (near Delhi or Agra, though some traditions say Runkta, Uttar Pradesh)

Caste: Believed to be from a Brahmin or poor family, accounts vary

Physical: Blind from birth (as per popular belief)

Language: Wrote in Braj Bhasha, the poetic dialect of Hindi

Spiritual Life:

Surdas Ji became a Vaishnav Bhakta, deeply devoted to Krishna.

He was influenced by Bhakti Movement saints and was a disciple of Acharya Vallabhacharya, founder of the Pushti Marg tradition.

His bhakti was full of emotional love (bhav bhakti), especially focused on Krishna’s childhood leelas (divine plays).

Contribution to Guru Granth Sahib:

Only 1 hymn by Bhagat Surdas Ji is included, found on Ang 1253 of the Guru Granth Sahib.

This hymn is not found in other Surdas literature, leading scholars to believe it may be authentic oral tradition preserved uniquely by the Sikh Gurus.

( Main Message of the Hymn )

The hymn expresses deep humility, where Surdas prays to God not to forget him — even if he is the lowest among sinners. He begs for grace and spiritual liberation.

“O Lord, even if I am the worst of sinners, still, do not forget me.”

This reflects the core Sikh and Bhakti teaching — God’s mercy is greater than any sin, and humility is the highest virtue.

Legacy:

Bhagat Surdas Ji is celebrated in both Hinduism and Sikhism, but only Guru Granth Sahib preserves this particular hymn. His inclusion by Guru Arjan Dev Ji shows that true devotion transcends sectarian boundaries, and even a blind, poor, marginalized poet could find spiritual greatness.
