[ THE HISTORY OF BHAGAT TRILOCHAN JI ]


Bhagat Trilochan Ji was a revered saint and spiritual poet whose hymns are included in the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism. He was one of the prominent Bhagats (devotees) whose writings were accepted by Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru, due to their deep spiritual insight and devotion.

Time period: Estimated to have lived in the 13th century (around 1267 CE).

Place of birth: Near Pandharpur, Maharashtra, India.


Caste: Born into a Vaishya (merchant) family. Language: Primarily wrote in Marathi and Sant Bhasha (a mixture of regional languages and dialects).

Bhagat Trilochan Ji was a deeply spiritual man who strongly opposed hypocrisy, especially among those who wore religious symbols and garments but led dishonest lives. His poetry emphasizes truthful living, devotion to God, and equality. He believed that external religious marks are meaningless if one's heart and actions are not pure.

4 hymns (Shabads) of Bhagat Trilochan Ji are included in the Guru Granth Sahib.

His verses often contain strong messages against ego, pride, and false renunciation.

He taught that true renunciation is internal, not external.

Famous Teachings_


One of his well-known shabads starts with:

Antar kapat niranjan seva, tivai jog kamayi" One who is deceitful within but outwardly performs service is not truly practicing yoga."

This reflects his emphasis on internal purity over external display.

Legacy:


Though not a Sikh himself, Bhagat Trilochan Ji's teachings aligned with the Sikh Gurus' philosophy.  His inclusion in the Guru Granth Sahib highlights the universal message of devotion and righteousness, transcending caste, religion, and region.
