Dhru – The Child Devotee Who Earned Eternal Place in the Stars
Who was Dhru?
Dhru (ਧ੍ਰੂ) is a legendary figure from ancient Hindu scriptures, particularly mentioned in the Bhagavata Purana. He is known as a young prince who, despite facing rejection and humiliation in childhood, attained an eternal spiritual status through intense devotion to God.
His name appears in Guru Granth Sahib Ji as a symbol of unwavering bhagti (devotion), representing how even a child can reach the highest spiritual heights through love for the Divine.
> ਧ੍ਰੂ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤੇਰੇ ਭਾਣੇ।
(Those like Dhru and Prahlad, who meditated on the Lord, O Dear Lord, were pleasing to Your Will.)
— Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Ang 488
The Story of Dhru>
Dhru was the son of King Uttanapada. His stepmother humiliated him and prevented him from sitting on his father’s lap. Hurt and confused, young Dhru asked his mother why this happened. She told him only God could grant such honor.
Motivated by this, Dhru went deep into the forest and meditated on Narayan (Waheguru) with deep concentration. Pleased by his dedication, God blessed him with eternal fame and placed him in the skies as the Dhruva Tara (Pole Star), which never moves — a symbol of constancy.
Dhru in Sikh Thought_
In the Guru Granth Sahib, Dhru is not celebrated for religious rituals or caste — but for his pure, unwavering devotion. He is mentioned alongside Prahlad and other devotees to emphasize that age, status, or circumstances don’t matter in the spiritual journey — only sincere bhagti does.
Spiritual Message_
Dhru’s story in Gurbani teaches us:The Divine accepts sincere love from anyone >even a child.
Challenges in life can become gateways to divine realization.Focus and steadfastness in naam simran (meditation) lead to spiritual success.
